Prestige killed him
German hermit Manfred Gnandigger died from grief at age 66 in his cabin. The oil slick from the “Prestige” had destroyed his garden along with the sculptures he had made from rocks, wood, bones and whatever objects he found from the sea. He moved to Camellet in 1962. He wore a suit and tie and went to church. He developed environmental concerns, and by the end of the decade, he had substituted his suit with a cloth wrapped around his hips

Fiona, 2005, lambda print, mounted on aluminium, 170 x 125 cm

12-year-old Fiona Revillon massacred by her gang
” She was telling everybody that I’d slept with her and gotten her pregnant. I was getting sick of it. ” On July 5th, 2000, 21-year-old Raphael took Fiona off along the Deûle canal. Then he drowns her. Fiona follows him blindly, in love no doubt. Especially as she has no other place to go. She is fleeing the shelter where she has been abandoned by her depressed mother. ” I gave her a blow to the right side of the head with a stick. I thought I had killed her right off, then she moved. ” The kicks rain down and her face is trampled on but she manages to get up. Johan drags her to the edge of the canal, Raphael gives her a kick in the back. ” She caught herself on Johan’s foot but he pushed her into the water. I split but Johan called me back: ” She’s still on her feet..” I jumped into the canal and put her head underwater. Once I had finished Fiona off, Johan helped me out onto the bank.” Raphael Laine and Johan Deleplace were sentenced to twenty years imprisonment. Meddy Poulain to three and Sebastien Maetie to two years for ” non prevention of a crime.” On another July 5th, three years before, Rafael’s father, idolized by his son, hung himself. The morning of the crime Raphaelvisited his father’s grave. He took tranquillizers and drank. A lot. ” Maybe on another day it wouldn’t have happened. But that day I was very angry. “Three days after his incarceration Raphael tried to hang himself with the sheets of his cell

LYDIA DAMBASSINA, 2005

LYDIA DAMBASSINA, 2005
I have been collecting clippings from daily newspapers for a number of years concerning news, images or thoughts which prompt in me an interest and often an emotion. My collecting is methodical neither in its frequency nor in the choice of its subjects. I am not doing the work of a researcher. I collect poetry and dread independent of the major events and I am not doing so in a deliberate manner. Perhaps it seems superfluous to select for the most part minor events rather than the major events which may have occurred on the same date. Nonetheless, I challenge many to say when and why did the war on Serbia, the war in Iraq, the massacre of the Chechians, the Moscow theatre tragedy, the execution in Ratsak of 45 Albanians by Serbian policemen etc., etc. happen. Our memory is short and collective emotion heals like the flu. “ Only the present or eternity make me dream – while the press works by definition only on a recent past.
That is what renders it necessary and perishable. “Poetry is more philosophical than history,” said Aristotle, because it is more general and less anecdotal. Not only is art a creation, and not a reflection, but the reality it creates is longer lasting and more intense than the one upon which it was based.” Liberation, Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 December 2004
I use two languages in my work: that of images and that of words, bringing to mind the passage on the weather in Michel Tournier’s “The Meteors” in which “the narrator, installed in the position overlooking
the gust of wind (or conversely the gust of wind taking the place of the narrator). The most utterly insignificant events become meaningful, an interesting phenomenon which illustrates the process of narrative distinction allowing the multiplication of points of view within the same referential system”.
